Purebred Dogs and Preservation Breeders
Purebred dogs are purposely bred by breeders whose goal is to preserve, and improve, a heritage breed of dog. Most, if not all, breeds of dogs were originally developed for a purpose. Some breeds were developed as working dogs to help around the farm or to help with hunting water fowl. Other breeds were developed to find and kill rodents. Finally some breeds were developed to simply be good companions. When considering a purebred dog it is important to learn about the origins and purpose of the breed.
There are some definite advantages to purebred dogs. Adult size, appearance, health, and temperament characteristics (breed traits), are more predictable. In addition, most breeders of purebred dogs are eager to help you with training, grooming, behaviour, health issues, and any other concerns that may arise during the life of your dog. |
What to Look For in a Breeder
Reputable breeders will not place their puppies in pet stores. They will have at least one of the pup's parents, and often other related family members (sire, grandparent, or an older sibling), available to view. Meeting the puppy's mother is of prime importance - all puppies are cute, but she will give you a good idea of the future personality of the puppy. A flashy website doesn't indicate the quality of the breeder or their dogs. Look for the following in a responsible breeder.
